A little awareness about their damaging effect can help us keep a check on them, when they do enter our minds. We know from lots of research that negative thinking can actually hurt your ability to process information and to think clearly. In fact, thinking negatively about your problems not only doesn’t resolve anything, it can make things worse that in turn can further increase your frustration and thus can get you stuck in this negative loop or cycle and it can keep you trapped in there. This then increases your stress levels and UNLESS this behavior is checked, it is known to trigger changes in the brain that may increase the likelihood of a multitude of various mental disorders such as anxiety, depression, schizophrenia and mood disorders. So, suffice it to say that you should guard against any bad thoughts entering your mind as not only they are not helpful, they can even cause permanent negative changes in your personality. More than that, even if you try to be positive once in a while so you can try to move forward with your life, negative thoughts can take over UNLESS you try hard to keep them away. So, as a first step – Ensure that you know how damaging these thoughts can be and their power to actual change your personality, which can then have a negative effect in other parts of your life including increasing your problems with your loved ones, not being able to concentrate to solve life’s issues and so on. Next, let’s discuss the Quranic remedy for such thoughts. The Quran uses the term ‘waswas’ for bad thoughts, which essentially refers to the devil’s or Satan’s whispers that he puts in our hearts and minds. The satan or shaytann uses these thoughts to then drive other negative emotions within us. For example, fear is one of those emotions. In one verse of the Quran, Allah tells us in Surah Al-Baqarah verse 268 that “Satan threatens you with poverty and orders you to immorality, while Allah promises you forgiveness from Him and bounty.” So, Allah revealed Surah An-Naas which is the last surah or chapter of the Quran the verses of which are about asking for Allah’s protection against Satan or Shaytan and his whispers. Reciting this Surah with conviction, therefore, gives us the opportunity to ask Allah the Rabb, the King and God of all people, to protect us and keep us safe from the ‘waswas’, and the bad thoughts that the Satan whispers into our hearts to either get us fearful, worried or simply to incite us to do bad things. The waswas can also be from certain bad people who can then lead you to bad behavior and we also learn that from the same Surah. From many of the sayings of the Prophet (saws), we know that he gave a great significance to both the last Surahs of the Quran, which are Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Naas. In a hadith by Sahih Muslim we learn that the Prophet said, “Do you not see that there have been verses revealed to me tonight the like of which has not been seen before. They are (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Naas).” So, we are advised to recite these two Surahs a few times throughout the day. But if you experience a lot of bad thoughts, repeat these Surahs more often with a strong conviction and you will InShaAllah observe a huge improvement.
