If you’ve ever wondered “How does load order work in fallout 4?“, or just want to know the correct mod load order, then this final episode of the Fallout 4 Best Mods Series will help! And for anyone following the series, I have included my own load order below!

─ SO... HOW DOES LOAD ORDER WORK ??? ─
It’s pretty simple really, the lower a mod is in the load order, the later it is loaded when the game starts up! What this means is that any mod you want to have work and NOT be changed by further mods should be as LOW in the load order as possible.
Say you have “Mod A” and “Mod B”, both adding new hairstyles but both changing “Hairstyle 1” into a different haircut. If “Mod B” is lower in the load order, then in game you won’t see the original “Hairstyle 1” or the changed “Hairstyle 1” from Mod A; in this case, with “Mod B” lower we will only see the “Mod B” hairstyle.
─ So… WHAT ORDER SHOULD I USE ??? ─
Given there are so many types of mods out there you might think that this section will be pretty confusing… but to be honest most mods will find a home under the below headings and should simply just be placed in that order.
► SHARED RESOURCES
Besides the Fallout4.esm (and DLC esm’s), that will always remain at the top of the list, this heading contains mods that should stay at the top. In here we want mods that are frameworks for other mods to use (such as Armor Keywords).
► SETTLEMENT BUILDING MOD ESMs
Like the above heading, in here we want framework mods, only this time specific to Settlement Building.
► OTHER ESMs
Here we want to add every other master file (.esm) that we didn’t place in the above headings; like SimSettlements.esm.
► BUG FIXES
Mods like the Unofficial Fallout4 Patch should go here!
► SETTLEMENT BUILDING MODS
If it adds new building elements or changes how settlements are built, pop it in here!
► SETTLEMENT BUILDING MOD PATHCES
Patches should always go below the main mod that it applies to!
► SCRAPPING MODS
If it modifies scrapping in any way place it here!
► GAMEPLAY MODS
I broke this section down into 6 subheadings to make it a little easier for my self:
o Faction Overhaul (My Minutemen, Mutant Overhaul...)
o Added Function (Bullet time, Take cover...)
o Gameplay Tweaks (Larger Shipments, More Radstags...)
o Radio (Gamma Radio, Atomic Radio...)
o Quests (Ransacked Relays, Fusion City Rising...)
o New Lands/New Interiors (MoreXplore, Grim Vaults...)
► FOLLOWER MODS
Pretty simple; add all mods that effect followers. Be sure to include the build-able robot companions too.
► AESTHETIC MODS
If it modifies or adds music, sounds, textures, or model meshes, then this is where it should go.
► SETTLEMENT MODS
Not to be confused with 'Settlement Building Mods' from earlier, here we want all mods that alter and add Settlers, increase settlement population and build limits, as well as any mod that plays with Settlement scripting.
► ITEM SORTING MODS
If you love to modify your Fallout 4, then you’ve surely downloaded an item sorting mod! Personally I use Valdacil’s, but regardless of the sorting mod you have this is where it goes.
► BODY REPLACERS
Now this heading is rather specific and probably wont see many mods under it. If you have CBBE or an equivalent NPC body replacer then this is where to place it.
► WEAPON MODS
Any mod that adds a new weapon to the game should go here.
► ARMOR & CLOTHING MODS
If it adds new armour and/or clothing, then place it here.
► CRAFTING MODS
New crafting recipes or modifications of old ones, you’ll want to add here.
► WEAPON ALTERING MODS
Here we want all mods that change weapons… not adding new ones, but changing the old ones! Mods like 50cal Lovin, 3D Scopes, etc!
► ARMOR & CLOTHING ALTERING MODS
Same as above but for armour and clothing! The mods Better Power Armour & Armorsmith Extended come to mind.
► END OF LOAD ORDER MODS
And last but not least, I’ve added this heading for all of those mods that specifically say they should be at the very end of the load order!
