The Supreme Court today delivered
The Supreme Court today delivered a critical judgment on the rights of Muslim Women to Alimony ending decades of political debate around what has come to be known as the Shah Bano case. The Judges made it clear that a Muslim woman, just like any woman from any religion, can apply for maintenance under Section 125 of the CrPc. The court rejected an appeal by a Muslim man from Telangana who did not want to pay his divorced wife monthly alimony. Amid this big verdict, which will invariably open the doors for a new debate on a Uniform Civil Code, we speak to Hilal Ahmed, political researcher and scholar who has just published an important new book - A Brief History of the Present, Muslims in New India
