At the Central Economic Work Conference, China's all-important annual economic meeting held in early December, the country's top policymakers announced that China's economy is recovering against the backdrop of structural reform. China's leadership sees high-quality development as the "unyielding principle of the new era." What does it say about the future direction of the Chinese economy? How can China navigate through a complex geopolitical and economic environment toward achieving modernization and full recovery? In this edition of the Hub, Wang Guan talks to Liu Baocheng, dean of the Center for International Business Ethics at the University of International Business and Economics, to Jilles Djon, director of Business Operations at the African Chamber of Commerce in China, and to Andy Mok, senior research fellow at the Center for China and Globalization.
Despite challenges and pressures, China's economy maintains a steady path thanks to its politically stable leadership, notes Mok. Liu explains that China intends to promote industrial innovation through technological innovation, especially by using ground-breaking and cutting-edge technologies to foster new industries, new models and growth drivers, and develop new productive forces. And as some foreign businesses have announced plans to restructure their supply and industrial chains, Djon notes that China has world-class infrastructure, a skilled workforce, and remains a crucial market for companies in Africa and the Global South, echoing Mok's "the next China is China" quip.
