Ibn al-ʿArabī looks deeply into the imagery of the ‘two bows’ length or even nearer’ verse in the Qurʾān. His hand-drawn illustration of a circle with a diameter line is static – but his description is dynamic. When the two arcs of the circle drawn nearer to the diameter line, the line stretches – and thins. This membrane is the curtain of the shadow play, and Ibn al-ʿArabī describes events that bring us nearer: the ‘voluntary good deeds’, visiting the sick, feeding the hungry, attending someone on the deathbed, and attending birth.
