Mega Man The Wily Wars is a game I’ve wanted to get ever since I found out about it back in the early 2000’s. I’m a huge fan of the original 8-bit Mega Man games, in fact they are probably my most played games ever, I must have finished Megaman 2,3,4 and 5 all at least ten times each by now, I can pretty much play all those games off by heart, so when I found out that the Mega Drive had a Mario All Stars style remake on the Mega Drive, I immediately wanted to try it out, so of course, I headed straight to eBay and… oh… Well at the time it wasn’t quite as expensive as it is today, but it was still a good few hundred quid.

I know I could have easily emulated it, but Mega Man is such an important series that I always wanted to experience it properly, on original hardware and with an official cartridge.

The game was only ever released physically in Europe and Japan, so it’s very caught after, especially in America, where I presume quite a lot of the copies from the UK have ended up over the years… I did the the Japanese version a few times while I was out there, but again, it’s still really expensive, so I never ended up picking it up.

Fast forward many years until 2019 and when RetroBit announced they were releasing an officially licensed collectors edition, I knew I had to pre order it straight away! And now, two more years later, it’s finally here! And I’m so excited! So let’s get straight into an unboxing of this amazing collectors edition!

So, the game contains updated versions of the first three games, each one recreated faithfully based on the NES originals with updated graphics and music. As well as the three main games, it also includes an unlockable extra few stages called the Wily Tower, which is a really cool set of challenging levels and bosses, and an interesting idea where before starting the stage, you can select from any of the weapons and upgrades from the first theee games.

Disregarding the slow gameplay because it’s running at 50hz, the actual movement just felt a bit off, take this section in Mega Man 2 for example where you have to jump across this gap using the item 1, In the original game I can do this section no problem at all, but on the mega drive, I kept sliding off or not being able to get close enough to the edge to put the next item down in time, I repeated this 4 or 5 times until I ran out of weapon energy and had to kill myself to restart the level and get the energy back! I’ve never had a problem here before! Another really weird thing that was almost immediately apparent, the way you jump onto platforms that are just high enough to jump onto is weird, you kind of have to push against them and slide up, which threw me off in a few situations. The Physics are weird and not as intuitive as the NES games

The unlockable Wily Tower stages were really exciting for me, completely brand new stages with new and pretty fun boss fights too! The best thing about this was the fact that you can choose whatever weapons and upgrades you want from any of the threee games, and choose a load out that fit’s your play style! I really learned to enjoy using the quick boomerang as my main weapon!

This was probably my favourite thing of the whole collection, and I wish that Capcom had expanded the idea of choosing a load out and made it into a full game on it’s own, rather than just a few stages.

Despite my criticisms though, the games are still very well designed and fun to play through
