Poland prove too much for Brazil.Krakow, Poland, June 20, 2014 -- Poland marked the opening of the Krakow Arena in fine style as they saw off world No.1 Brazil 3-1 (25-20, 25-21, 28-30 and 25-20) in the fifth week of 2014 FIVB Volleyball World League on Friday.

Home star David Konarski topped the scores with 21 points while Ricardo Souza scored 15 for Brazil. The win adds to Poland's two victories over Pool A leaders Italy last weekend and sees them tighten the gap on Iran in the battle for second place.

The game opened promisingly for the visitors as they quickly jumped ahead to a 4-1 and then 9-5 lead. The Poles regained focus at that moment and leveled the scores with four unanswered points forcing Brazilian coach Bernardo Rezende to call a timeout. Poland took the lead following an impressive block as the game stayed close. However, a series of unanswered points saw the home side take advantage, going 1-0 up.

Brazil seemed more focused in the second and cut out a number of unforced errors taking the lead 8-6 at the first TTO and then 14-9. The hosts eventually drew even at 18-18 the added pressure saw Brazil lose focus as they threw away the second.

The visitors again took the early lead in the third as they looked to recover. But Poland were once again relentless in chasing down Bernardinho's side as they went into the first TTO 8-5 up. Brazil refused to lose focus this time, however, as they closed the scores at 18-18 and then took the lead at 21-18 thanks to a pair of Lucas Saatkamp aces. Poland coach Stephane Antiga called a timeout and although the hosts pushed Brazil to the limit, to the delight of the home fans, they weren't able to tie the match up as Brazil forced it into a fourth set.

Brazil had a new found determination in the fourth and stormed out of the gates, taking a 8-6 lead at the first TTO. But the Poles didn't stay behind for long as they drew level with the world No.1 and then regained control at 17-14 and then 19-15. The 15,000-strong home fans then helped carry their team home as they made light work of their opponents in the closing points of the set to win 3-1.

Now the teams will move to Bydgoszcz, where they will meet again on Sunday.
