His relationship with James Arness started as a friendly partnership. He worked to get him a role on Gunsmoke that lasted for 20 years. That’s why he felt so abandoned when James didn’t show up to help him work on his passion project, a massive and expensive film about the Alamo. He never forgave him for the slight.
