1. *Mass of the Proton:* The canal rays exhibited characteristics of positively charged particles, indicating they had a significant mass. This suggested that these particles were much heavier than electrons but lighter than atoms. Thomson realized that these canal rays were composed of a new, subatomic, positively charged particle with a mass approximately equal to that of a hydrogen ion.

2. *Positive Charge:* The behavior of the canal rays indicated that they carried a positive charge. By studying their deflection in electric and magnetic fields, Thomson concluded that these particles were positively charged.

3. *Identity as Hydrogen Ions (Protons):* Through further experimentation and analysis, Thomson determined that these positively charged particles were, in fact, hydrogen ions – the nuclei of hydrogen atoms. This identification led to the discovery of the proton as a fundamental subatomic particle.

*Significance:*
The discovery of the proton in the canal ray experiments was groundbreaking and added a crucial piece to the puzzle of atomic structure. The existence of positively charged protons in the nucleus, along with the negatively charged electrons in the electron cloud, provided a balanced electrical charge for the atom. This laid the groundwork for the subsequent development of the nuclear model of the atom, with a small, dense nucleus containing protons and neutrons, surrounded by electrons in energy levels or orbitals.
