Shankar : The Lone African Elephant of India

Shankar was received as a diplomatic gift in 1996 when he was about 2 years old , and was named Shankar after President Shankar Dayal Sharma. They came to India as a couple, his only companion ‘Bombai’ passed away in 2001, since then he is living a lonely life in the zoo.
He is now about 28 yrs old and has lived his entire life in Delhi Zoo.
Elephant are known to forms strong social bonds in the wild and the absence of a companion must be hurting to Shankar. He showed repeated stereotypic moments of swaying head which is a sign of stress in animals.

India has only one other African elephant in captivity, a male, named Rambo, in the Mysore Zoo.

Elephants are intelligent, emotional & sensitive animals which form strong social bonds. They should never be kept alone; they must have company of their kind. The Delhi Zoo houses two Asian elephants named Laxmi and Hira. They have each other for company, and their earlier signs of distress have reduced.

The developing African country is one of the few that trades in live specimens as per law, as it has a surplus population that needs active management. Elephants are totally ill-suited to being kept in zoos where they suffer long-term psychological damage,

In contrast, zoos cannot possibly mimic wild habitats or reproduce the conditions which enable them to thrive

Recently thirteen African elephants from the Howletts Wild Animal Park in Kent, England, were flown more than 7,000 kilometers and released in the open in Kenya. This is the first time that a herd of elephants has ever been re-wilded anywhere in the world.

People sentiments are soaring high in India, to find a credible solution for Shankar, the Authorities is India are looking for a mate or a permanent solution to his plight.
