[K-SCIENCE] Yellow-colored Waxy Corn / YTN KOREAN

Farmers are working hard to grow corn in the field.

Unlike the conventional corn species, the corn is yellow colored.

This new yellow-colored, waxy corn variety has been jointly developed by the state-run Rural Development Administration(RDA) and the Goesan County government in South Korea's North Chungcheong Province.

The newly-developed waxy corn has beta carotene six times higher than conventional corn does.

Beta Carotene, the best-known provitamin A carotenoid, is highly effective in protecting eyesight and enhancing the level of immunity.

"For now, there are many white- and dark-colored glutinous corn varieties. But this yellow-colored corn is the first of its kind developed (in the country)."

Farmers can cultivate the new corn easily as it is very resistant to heavy rains and strong winds.

In addition, the new waxy corn variety can be harvested twice a year.

The new corn species is expected to be introduced to consumers starting from next year.
