President Cyril Ramaphosa has, as commander-in-chief of the armed forces, lauded the work done by members of the South African National Defence Force. Ramaphosa says the SANDF continues to ensure stability in the country.
On this day in 1917, more than 600 black South African troops died on the SS Mendi when it collided with the steamship Darro on the English Channel.
The soldiers were to be deployed to the frontlines of the First World War in France.
Ramaphosa was addressing the commemoration event in Richard's Bay in KwaZulu-Natal earlier.
Meanwhile, the office of the military ombudsman says it's currently seized with 15 complaints from the public on the conduct of members of the South African National Defence Force.
This is a decrease from the 56 complaints of alleged misconduct for the 2020/2021 financial year.
