This is Part 1 of the full trip from Hamburg-Altona to Munich Central by ICE 703. This ICE is one of the last ones operating with Class 401 on this connection. At the 1st of March it gets replaced by a Class 412 (ICE 4), so I used the opportunity to capture the ICE 1 experience completely. Maybe and hopefully the ICE 1 trains will come back there after their redesign!
After departing from Hamburg-Altona three minutes behind schedule, the train winds its way along the 60 km/h slow Hamburg-Altona connection railway, leading to the main station of the city. This is the last stop before reaching Berlin, speeding over the 230 km/h fast Hamburg-Berlin railway. This railways characteristic are the platforms directly next to the main tracks, which are equipped with barriers, due to the high speed of trains passing by. The transit through the capital city takes place via the North-South-Tunnel. At the main station the ICE got a delay of 6 minutes, because a blind window had to be masked from the outside. But by going full speed of 200 km/h until Bitterfeld the delay was able to be caught up nearly completely. The last part to Halle is limited to 160 km/h, despite the concrete trackbed.
