In Danish, liverwurst is called leverpostej. Leverpostej is a very traditional smørrebrød. Before adding a topping, smear the rye bread with butter.

Our first leverpostej open face sandwich is the most typical combination of bacon and fried mushrooms.   A traditional way to make fried mushrooms is to first fry a few strips of bacon.  Then fry sliced mushrooms quickly in the bacon fat.

1st Liverwurst Sandwich Ingredients:  
* 1 piece of rye bread
* butter
* 2 or 3 slices of liverwurst
* 1 or 2 pieces of crispy bacon
* 1 or 2 tablespoons of fried mushrooms
* 1 or 2 slices of pickles

Leverpostej with pickled beets is very common on this open face sandwiches too. In Danish pickled beets is syltede rødbeder.

2nd Liverwurst Sandwich Ingredients:  
* 1 piece of rye bread
* butter
* 2 or 3 slices of liverwurst
* 1 poached apple
* 1 or 2 prunes
* 3 or 4 slices of pickled beets

There are many other countries that make similar open face sandwiches such as in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Germany! To give a cultural identity to a liverwurst, there are different recipes using specific ingredients such as onion or bacon.

In Denmark, liverwurst or in Danish leverpostej dates back to the late 1800's. The leverpostej sandwich has developed from a plain sandwich with just one topping to an elaborate Smørrebrød creation.  The versatile spread can be served warm, cold, sliced or spread on bread. However most leverpostej sandwiches are made with rye bread.

A traditional Danish leverpostej sandwich has assorted toppings called pålæg. You can create your own personalized sandwich by adding your favorite topping such as pickled beets, crispy fried onions, mushrooms, cucumbers.  Our video shows how to make two different type liverwurst sandwiches Danish style!
