In this video, Dr. Priyanka Singh, a retinal consultant at Shekar Eye Hospital in Bangalore, discusses a condition called Posterior Vitreous Detachment (PVD).

The eyeball contains a jelly-like substance called Vitreous, which makes up about 90% of its volume. The Vitreous is clear and transparent, consisting mainly of water (about 99%), collagen, and hyaluronic acid. As we age, the gel-like substance undergoes natural wear and tear, causing it to liquefy. The Vitreous is normally attached to the retina at various points. However, due to this liquefaction process, the gel collapses in on itself, leading to detachment from the retina, a condition known as PVD.

Although PVD itself doesn't typically cause pain or permanent vision loss, it can result in other symptoms such as floaters, flashes of light, and the perception of dark black floaters in your vision. If you have ongoing floaters, retinal tears, or macular holes, it is necessary to seek treatment for Posterior Vitreous Detachment.

Posterior Vitreous Detachment (PVD) is a common condition, particularly among older individuals who may have tears or holes in their retina. It is important to promptly address these issues with laser treatment to prevent the risk of retinal detachment.

If you notice any changes or difficulties with your eyesight, it is crucial not to self-diagnose. PVD symptoms can resemble those of other serious eye disorders, making it essential to consult an eye doctor for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Remember to schedule annual eye examinations as part of your routine. By doing so, any potential eye or vision problems can be detected and addressed early on, ensuring timely treatment.
