South Africa boss another session as they head into another break. The Proteas are 392/7 in exactly 100 overs and have a first-innings lead of 147 runs! 34 overs 136 runs and 2 wickets in the story of the morning session of the moving day... Dean Elgar and Marco Jansen resumed the day for the hosts batting positively and pushing India further into deep waters. Elgar continued his brilliant batting form scoring another 150+ score and getting to his best individual score against India in Tests. Jansen on the other hand clubbed runs for fun and showed great solidity to smash another Test fifty and get to his career-best in the format.
The 111-run 6th wicket partnership was finally broken by Shardul Thakur with Elgar gloving a delivery down the leg to the keeper who in the process burnt a review but was worth a chance as he played a tremendous knock in his final Test series and in his final Test match on his home ground. Elgar scored 185 off 287 balls hitting 28 boundaries. Gerald Coetzee (19 off 18) came in and hit a few cracking strokes before becoming the victim of Ravichandran Ashwin just before the break. as South Africa kept stretching their on a sunny morning that was near perfect to bat. Little could be achieved with the new ball as well as Elgar first got to his 150 and then Jansen notched up his half-century.
The duo added 111 for the 7th wicket before Elgar was out in bizarre fashion - gloving a harmless ball heading down leg. Coetzee fell cheaply trying to take on Ashwin in the final over before Lunch. Jansen continues to bat on his best-ever Test score would truly be eyeing three figures at this stage. Can India fight back or has the game already slipped? South Africa are 7 down but have extended lead to a mammoth 147 runs taking the first session hands-on. Will keep heaping more runs or will India bundle up the hosts quickly? On bowling front India initiated tight lines lengths Bumrah Siraj.
India employed shorter lengths against the hosts which didn't go well. The Proteas then turned the tide putting India on the defensive as Krishna Thakur took charge presenting a stern test for the Indian bowlers. Adding India's challenges a few fielding errors crept in too. Even after the new ball was introduced India found it challenging to stem the flow of runs. Thakur provided the much-needed breakthrough for India as he got rid of the centurion Dean Elgar but the damage was already done. Ashwin finally got a wicket right before Lunch but all in all a disappointing session for the visitors.
Session Summary - 34 overs 136 runs and 2 wickets! As the players head to Lunch on Day 3 South Africa are surely the happier side of the two showcasing a fabulous intent in batting. It was a fortunate timely start with the hosts having a slim lead of 11 runs. Dean Elgar and Marco Jansen faced the Indian pacers adeptly breaking free against Prasidh Krishna and accumulating quick boundaries. Dean Elgar achieved his highest Test score against.
India and didn't break a sweat while Marco Jansen displayed a balanced mix of watchfulness and aggression seizing opportunities with both hands and standing unbeaten on 72 the highest score of his Test career. Dean Elgar was finally dismissed on 185 just 15 short of his 200 right before half an hour or so to Lunch but he definitely put the hosts in a commanding position. With still no signs of Bavuma it was Coetzee who came in to bat. He was aggressive from the moment he came to the crease and struck some powerful boundaries upfront but was soon dismissed by Ashwin in the last over before the Lunch break.
