A few summers ago, I visited the Fort Necessity battlefield site and found out for the first time that the engagement at Fort Necessity wasn't Washington's first military engagement. Washington and his men built Fort Necessity after battling a small French force at what has become known as Jumonville Glen. What happened at Jumonville Glen is disputed, but given the terrain, the French account that they were ambushed by Washington and his men seems a lot more credible than Washington's account that the French fired first. The Battle of Jumonville Glen, as it was called, was the first engagement of the French and Indian War, which had yet to be declared.

Hopefully, you will enjoy following in the footsteps of our nation's first president as a young man seeking his first taste of military glory!
