These are photos from Volume 12 of The North American Indian, by Edward S. Curtis, the epic 20 volume collection of over 2,000 images of American Indian tribes west of the Mississippi, taken between 1898 and 1928.
The photos include various shots of snake priests, ceremonial activities before the actual dance, as well as various shots of the dance itself - all set to a recording of a Hopi Snake Dance chant recorded by Dr Jesse Fewkes of the U.S. Bureau of Ethnology in 1924.
The Snake Dance of the Hopi is ancient.  Writer Frank Waters states that it is most certainly the oldest prayer for rain in North America - its origins in the far, far distant past of the Hopi.
