Hadith On Reading Verses of Surah-tul-Baqarah Just After Burying A Muslim

Imam An-Nawawiyy (d. 676 H.) said in his book Al-AdhKar: "It has been reported to us through Sunan Al-Bayhaqiyy with a chain of narration classified as hasan, that Ibn `Umar regarded the recitation of the beginning of Surat Al-Baqarah and its ending upon the grave of a newly buried Muslim as a mustahab (likeable) matter". He also said: "Ash-Shafi`iyy and his companions in his madhhab said that it is a mustahab (likeable) matter to recite some of the Qur'an upon the grave of a Muslim, and they added that if the Qur'an was recited in its entirety then that would also be a rewardable matter".

Sayyiduna al-Lajlaaj (Radhiallaahu Anhu), a companion of Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam), had bequested his son that after he leaves this world, he should recite the beginning and end of Surah al-Baqarah at the head side of his grave. Sayyiduna al-Lajlaaj (Radhiallaahu Anhu) then mentioned that he heard this from Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam). (al-Mu'jamul Kabeer of Imaam Tabrani; Hafiz Haythami has regarded the narrators of this tradition as reliable - refer Majmauz-zawaaid vol.3 pg.44)

The incident of Imaam Ahmad ibn Hanbal has been recorded by Imaam Abu Bakr al-Khallaal in his Kitaabul Jaami as well as in his booklet entitled, 'Amr bil Ma'roof Wa Nahy anil Munkar, and according to this, Imaam Ahmad had approved of the recitation of the beginning and end of Surah al-Baqarah (refer Atharul Hadith of al-Muhaddith Shaykh Muhammad Awwaamah pgs.162-163

Surat Al-Baqara -- The Heifer.

1. The Prophet, (saw), said: 'Everything has a hump, and the hump of the Qur'an is Surat al-Baqara; if anyone recites it in his house during the night no devil will enter it for three nights; if anyone recites it in his house during the day-time no devil will enter it for three days.' Ibn Hibban Tabarani and Baihaqi transmittted it from Sahl bin Sa'd, for whom Allah's (swt) Good Pleasure is prayed.

2. The Throne Verse (2:255): The Prophet (saw) said: There is a verse in Surat al-Baqara which is the chief verse of the Qur'an and when it is recited in a house in which there is a devil he will certainly get out of it: It is the Throne verse.' Al-Hakim, and Baihaqi transmitted it from Abu Huraira, for whom Allah's (swt) Good Pleasure is prayed.

3. The last verses of Surat al-Baqara: The Prophet (saw) said: 'Allah (swt) finished Surat al-Baqara with two verses which He has given me from His Treasure which is under the Throne: so learn them and teach them to your womenfolk and children, for they are a blessing, a recitation and a supplication.' al-Hakim transmitted it from Abu Dharr, for whom Allah's (swt) Good Pleasure is prayed.
