A19 Incandescent Bulb Replacements www.lightingsupply.com/a19.aspx Since 2012, traditional incandescent bulbs have been phased out of production and importation in the United States to encourage more efficient lighting. As you go to replace your bulbs over time, there are a few things you'll want to consider. For starters, you're no longer choosing a light bulb by its watts, but by its lumens. A watt measures the amount of energy being used, while a lumen measures the amount of light being emitted by a source. Another important variable in bulb replacement is color temperature, or how warm or cool a bulb's light appears. Traditional 60W incandescent bulbs are 2700 Kelvin (or 2700K), which is perfect for areas where a warm look is important. Replacement bulb temperatures range from 2700K-5000K, which means they give you much more design flexibility. The higher the Kelvin temperature, the cooler the light will appear. The bulb's lumen rating and Kelvin temperature are both shown on the lighting facts label on the packaging, so make sure to check the label when purchasing new bulbs. Now let's take a look incandescent bulb replacement options and answer some frequently asked questions. The 3 most popular incandescent replacements are halogens (www.lightingsupply.com/a-shape-halogen-bulbs-1.asp…, CFLs (www.lightingsupply.com/spring-shaped-compact-fluor…, and LEDs (www.lightingsupply.com/a-lamp-led.aspx). For comparisons, we'll look at a 60W incandescent bulb, which produces about 800 lumens, and the bulbs that replace it. As you can see, replacement bulbs produce the same lighting with fewer watts, which is why they can save you a lot of money over time. And as technology advances, some of these bulbs may produce the same amount of light with even fewer watts, saving you even more. Some replacement bulbs will also save you money because of their long lifespan. Although some bulbs are more expensive up front, that cost is spread over many years. Based on nearly 3 hours of use per day, a typical incandescent or halogen bulb will last about 1 year, while CFLs are rated to last about 10 years and LEDs are rated to last up to 25. Next, do replacement bulbs act like incandescent bulbs? Incandescent and halogen bulbs are instant on and dim on virtually any dimmer. LED bulbs are also instant on, while many CFLs take a little time to reach full brightness. If you want an LED or CFL that dims, make sure the package says it will dim. It's also possible that you'll need to update your dimmer to work with these newer bulbs. Please note that CFLs contain a small amount of mercury, so special clean up is recommended if they're broken. Finally, how much will you spend per year on energy compared to a 60W incandescent? Based on this chart, you can see that all these replacement bulbs will save you money on energy, but that LEDs will save you the most. You might be surprised at how this can add up over time. If you replace 60 60W incandescents with equivalent LEDs, you could save almost $15,000 over 30 years! We hope this short video has answered some questions that will help you make the transition away from old-style incandescents into more efficient lighting options.
