Knowing your arrow's FOC (front of center) is a great starting point for building accurate, effective, and deadly arrows for both target shooting and bow hunting. FOC is a percentage front of center for your arrow's balance point.

It's helpful to think of an arrow as two levers and a fulcrum. anything in front of the balance point of  the arrow works against us to guide the arrow to the target. Anything behind the fulcrum/balance point works for us. High FOC and extreme FOC (EFOC) arrows seek to minimize the effects of the front lever arm while maximizing the steering ability of the rear.

By shooting EFOC arrows we can shoot smaller arrow fletching, arrows recover from archers paradox more quickly, and penetration is more complete. Additionally, EFOC arrows tend to fly better from a wider range of bows. You will probably need to move to a higher spine range to increase your arrow's dynamic spine in order to shoot higher FOC arrows.

In this video I show a few examples, carbon arrows, and wood shafts to demonstrate the difference. I began playing with high and extreme FOC arrows with my longbows and recurves about 8 years ago, after reading Dr. Ed Ashby's work on the subject, and have found them much more efficient than the standard arrow of 20 years ago.

In future videos we will be building and tuning EFOC arrows.
