Scientists use induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) in the laboratory and the clinic, but the reprogramming process used to transform somatic cells into iPSC is inefficient. To determine which transcription factor expression dynamics promoted successful iPSC formation, Thorsten Schlaeger, Domitilla Del Vecchio, and their team employed a synthetic circuit-based system and live cell imaging to follow human dermal fibroblasts expressing different protein levels during reprogramming.

In this video, the researchers observed the generation of a type III colony, composed of successfully reprogrammed iPSC.
