Flamingos are tall, and elegant wading birds. There are four flamingo species distributed throughout the Americas (including the Caribbean), and two species are native to Africa, Asia, and Europe. The name "flamingo" comes from either Portugese or Spanish flamengo meaning “flame-colored". In this video we’ll see about the 2 flamingo species found in India.

00:33 Greater Flamingo
Most widespread and largest species of flamingo family found in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Odisha, and South India. They are very tall with a height of 43 to 59 inches, wingspan is 55 inches, and weigh 2 to 4 kilo grams. They can be identified by their large Pink Bill with a Restricted Black Tip. Most of the plumage is pinkish-white, but the wing coverts are red and the primary and secondary flight feathers are black. They have a very long, "coat hanger" kind of neck, and entirely pink legs. They make goose-like honking calls. During the breeding season, they increase the frequency of their spreading uropygial secretions over their feathers and thereby enhance their color. Juveniles are grayish-brown and paler with dark legs. They feed on mollusks, and insects. Also consumes seeds of marsh grasses, algae, and decaying leaves. Occasionally they also feed on crabs and small fishes. They reside in mudflats and shallow coastal lagoons with salt water. They lay a single chalky-white egg (rarely two) on a mud mound. The chick is fed “crop milk”, a substance that comes from the adult bird's upper digestive tract. This is done by both their parents for 90 days after hatching. In captivity they can live upto 60 years, and in the wild, they live 30 - 40 years. They are good fliers, but need to run while beating their wings in order to take-off. Flies with an extended long neck and legs, having a striking deep pink-and-black wing pattern.

02:25 Lesser Flamingo
They are the smallest and deepest coloured flamingo species that are near threatened found in Gujarat and North Western parts of India. They are 31 to 35 inches tall, with a wingspan of 35 to 41 inches and weigh 2.5 kilo grams. They can be identified by their unique Dark Tricolored Black Tipped Bill and Red Legs. Most of the plumage is pinkish white. Their eyes are orange to yellow, surrounded by a ring of maroon. Their deep bill is specialized for filtering tiny food items. Males are a little taller than females. Mating season usually starts in the last quarter, from October to December. Like all flamingos, they lay a single chalky-white egg (rarely two) on a mound they build of mud. At 6 days old, chicks join a crèche with thousands of other chicks. Juveniles are grayish brown with dark grey beak, and overall darker than Greater Flamingos. Neither do they have a sense of smell nor a sense of taste. Their wings are narrow and the primary and secondary flight feathers are black, and their wing coverts are red. They possess the "hallux" or hind toe that some other flamingos do not have. They don’t migrate and prefer living in big colonies with sometimes more than 1 million birds, and are mostly active at late evenings and night. They are mostly found in inland alkaline lakes, salt pans, and coastal lagoon, where they gather in huge flocks to breed and eat microscopic blue-green algae. When food sources deplete, they fly between water bodies in large, V-shaped formations. Despite being the most numerous flamingo species, they are classified as near threatened due to its declining population, low number of breeding sites, threatened by human activities.
