Hello everyone and welcome back to ForB's English lesson video. My name is Richard and today, we are taking a look at these two expressions. I knew it. and I knew that. Do you know the difference? Let's take a look at two example conversations. Please fill in the blanks with "I knew it" or "I knew that."

Example number one:
Person A says, "Have you checked your TOEFL result? You need to get at least 71 to study abroad."
Person B says, "Yes, I got 80."
Person A says, "Blank. You were studying hard for it."

Example number two:
Person A says, "Hey Lucy. Guess what? You won't believe it but Sally and Harry got engaged."
Person B says, "Blank. She just told me yesterday."

Can you guess which expression is used in each example?

For example number one, the answer is "I knew it."
For example number two, the answer is "I knew that."

Do you know why? Let's take a look at the first example.

In this first example, person A didn't know person B's score but knew that person B was studying hard, so expected person B would get that score.

We use "I knew it" when we were expecting it would happen without knowing the results.

Alright? Let's take a look at the second example. In the second example, person A already knew that Sally and Harry got engaged before person A told person B.

We use "I knew that" when we already knew that information.

Alright? Let's take a look at another example.

Person A says, "Michael won the national tennis tournament."
Person B says, "Blank. He is a really good player."

In this situation, both "I knew it" and "I knew that" can fit in the blank.

If person B says "I knew it", person B didn't know the results but was expecting Michael to win.
If person B says "I knew that", that means person B knew the results before the conversation.

Alright, did you know the meaning of each expression?
