Raggiana Bird of Paradise Chick Hatching - Cincinnati Zoo

This is the third Raggiana Bird-of-Paradise chick hatched and reared at the Cincinnati Zoo. 11 AZA zoos house this species. The Cincinnati Zoo is one of two institutions currently having success breeding them.The parents have a habit of breaking the eggs, so we are “ghost rearing” the chick so it doesn’t imprint. To prevent imprinting, once its eyes open we start feeding from behind a screen so the chick doesn’t know where the food is coming from. The chick will be re-introduced to its parents once it is weaned.
