Randy Saunders does a walk-through of the 2013 Toyota Camry Hybrid.
So many people ask now "What is a Hybrid?" We get that question a lot even though we have has Hybrids in Canada since 2000. Toyota has been doing Hybrid research since the 1960's; they are always looking ahead at what to do next. They are the world leader in Hybrid technology.
What a Hybrid is is it's a vehicle that has both a gas engine and an electric engine. Depending on throttle load and depending on the type of hill you are going up or down, sitting still or moving quickly; one or the other or both of those engines work to drive the car forward.
The other thing about a Hybrid that is important to know is you don't plug it in. Electric motors go forwards but they also go backwards and when we step on the brakes the system tells the electric motor to go backwards. When this happens it does 2 things it helps slow the vehicle (much easier on the brakes!) but it also recharges the battery, so it is a self-supporting system. When the vehicle is idling it turns the engine off and allows the battery to recharge.
Why do people go to Hybrids? Many people want to be a friend of the environment but now we are finding they are looking at what they save on fuel. The Camry gets 60 miles per gallon. It is both City and Highway so you are getting almost double the mileage around town.
