To keep your body erect, you are fighting gravity, forcing your bones to become stronger which in turn reduces the risk for fractures or osteoporosis, common concerns when you get older. Here are helpful tips: • Start with short 5-10 minute walk everyday and gradually work your way up. You can also use a treadmill if u have one. Ideal exercise should be 30 minutes of walking, minimum 3x a week. • You should be able to hold a conversation while walking, if your short of breath, slow down. • If for some reason regular walking is painful for you, try walking in a shallow pool, we use this in our patients since the buoyancy of water may provide enough relief to allow you to complete your walking exercise. • Have the correct posture while walking, shoulders should be relaxed with your head balanced on top of your spine and not flexed forward. • Keep track of how much you walk, devices can help you monitor the number of steps that you took. • Start walking right away! Walk with your grand children in the park, take the stairs, walk your pet, park farther from your destination! Want to burn more calories? Try walking sideways, which burns 78 percent more calories than walking forward.
