Max Oesten (1843-1917) was a pupil of A. W. Bach and an organist in Königsberg.

He was the son of Theodore Oesten (1813-1870) the famous teacher in Berlin. Theodore published no organ music. There is not much information on him left today in contrast to his father. This piece is like ointment for our soul, the whole picture that is drawn puts us back to the romantic era, in fact the title means that we are at a lake in the evening... thinking about the day and reflecting about things... I think what helps to sink into this world is the quite expanded way of writing, although it is basically an ABA piece it is almost 7 minutes long, the parts theirselves are just quite long and not rushed, they tell their story and you can relax and sink into these thoughts. A beautiful mix of happy, serious, festive, cantabile, cheeky. To sit in front of the PC and try to write something beautiful is hard, you will then realize how good this writing is imo! To me this feels so nice, this prosaic way of writing, since we are in a world of incredible efficiency and accuracy, this gem of a past time shouldn't be forgotten. Maybe not necessarily even be played in concerts, but made public for everyone who wants to play something soothing and beautiful after a long day, as "house music", to sink into this thought and romantic "innocent" world with a lot of fantasy --.
