You’ve likely heard or been warned of the dangerous light known as blue light being emitted from the screens that surround us in our daily lives, but is blue light real and is it as harmful as we’re told? That’s what we’re going to have a look at in this video. Please do subscribe if you haven’t already it really help this small channel grow. To start with, blue light is 100% real, whether or not its harmful is another question. Lets have a look at what blue light actually is. Blue light is an example of electromagnetic energy found on the electromagnetic spectrum. Electromagnetic energy travels in waves, the longest being radio waves and the shortest being the incredibly dangerous gamma rays. The longer the wave the less energy it transmits. This is why radio waves are safely passing around us through the air at nearly all times without it effecting us, if gamma rays were doing the same thing, we’d be in a lot of trouble. Only some waves known as visible light can be seen by us. You cant see a radio wave or see an infrared signal move through the air from your tv remote to your tv for example. As we can see on the spectrum, blue light waves are fairly close in size and amount of energy transmitted to UV rays which can damage your skin or eyes, like when you get a sunburn or look at the sun for too long. This is where a lot of the assumptions that blue light must be dangerous comes from. So what emits blue light and is it actually dangerous? Blue light, like other colors of visible light, is all around you. The sun emits blue light. So do light bulbs, computers tvs, phones, and tablets all use LED technologies with high amounts of blue light. Humans are more exposed to blue light today than they ever have been. So far studies have shown no evidence that blue light causes any harm to the human eye at all. However as LED are relatively knew with people only being exposed to them for many hours per day in the last 15 – 20 years or so, it is possible that long term effects just haven’t been recorded yet. Using electronic devices for long periods of time can cause people to blink slightly less than usual which can cause eyes to dry out but this isn’t due to blue light. Even if it doesn’t cause physical harm to your eyes blue light can still cause sleep issues. Blue light is emitted by the sun during the day. Your eyes and even in your skin can perceive the difference between the intense blue light waves of bright daylight and the warmer, redder tones that signal the day is ending. When the light around you eases into those sunset shades, your eyes prompt your body to release your body’s natural stores of melatonin, the sleep-inducing hormone. If youre using devices late into the night you’re still receiving a higher than natural amount of blue light, stopping the release of the sleep inducing hormone causing you difficulty sleeping. Do you think there long term effects of blue light that we havet yet discovered?
