How are Silane sealers different from a Silane Siloxane sealer or Siloxane sealer?
So a Silane sealer comes from silicone.
It's derived from silicone. Very small molecules that penetrate deep into the concrete.
We use Silanes in very dense concrete.
We use them a lot for structural bridges, bridge decks, car parking decks - a lot of commercial industrial applications.
They're very volatile. They evaporate very quickly.
So, you have to have a lot of Silane in your formulation to make sure that when you apply it and they evaporate, there's still some left in the concrete.
As a result, they tend to be more expensive, and just more difficult to use.
A Silane Siloxane is a blended product.
They're using a Siloxane molecule or compound that's actually made from Silanes, but they're chained together.
They're linked together, so it's a larger compound that doesn't penetrate as deep, and it's not as volatile.
It's not going to evaporate as quickly.
So, the other thing about the Siloxane is that we can use them in lower pH environments.
The Silanes don't really work as well in older concrete that's lost some of it's alkalinity. It's a lower pH.
On different surfaces like brick and block that may have larger voids or lower pH than highly densified concrete slab... that's where the Silane Siloxanes come into play.
Using Siloxanes on their own is not normal because you want to have some deeper penetration.
So, the best way is to blend a Silane Siloxane together using a water base.
That water emulsion will carry it into the concrete safely.
And it's an easier way to handle the products than using a solvent based silane, for example.
