STORYLINE:

Militant fighters in the city of Diwaniya in south-central Iraq on Sunday said they are determined to continue armed resistance to the presence of US troops in Iraq.

They said they would stay loyal to the anti-US Shia cleric, Muqtada al-Sadr, who wants the US-led coalition to leave Iraq.

Militants could be seen out on the streets brandishing their weapons on Sunday, and earlier in the day a base of Spanish troops in the city came under mortar fire from unidentified attackers.

A military spokesman said there were no casualties or damage caused by the attack.

Military sources say that the 1,300 Spanish troops in Iraq - stationed in Diwaniya and the Shiite holy city of Najaf - come under rifle and mortar fire almost everyday from militiamen loyal to al-Sadr.

On Saturday evening three US Army soldiers traveling in a 1st Armored Division convoy were killed when they came under fire near Diwaniya, according to the US military.
