One month into the war
One month into the war between Israel and Hamas, scenes of the Gaza strip show familiar images of widespread destruction.
Israel’s military response to the Hamas-led attack on October 7th, has led to the killing of over 10,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.
Research analysis of satellite images of Gaza estimate that 27% to 35% of all buildings in the northern half of the territory have likely been damaged.
Analysis by Corey Scher (CUNY Graduate Center) and Jamon Van Den Hoek (Oregon State University) reveals that 13-18% of structures in Gaza, totalling 38,000 to 51,500 buildings, have been destroyed or damaged.
Images also show that places of worship, hospitals, schools and residential areas have been damaged or completely destroyed.
Most of the damage has been in heavily populated areas in northern Gaza, as Israel has ordered more than 1.1 million to move south.
But the images also confirms strikes in Southern Gaza, including areas along the main evacuation routes.
Israel says the Hamas Militants are hiding in tunnels under the buildings, and claim they have killed ‘dozens of Hamas commanders’.
