Now 53-year-old Andrew Solomon is a reputable American writer. He has won numerous honors including the National Book Award, having published one fiction A Stone Boat and four non-fiction books, among which Far From the Tree: Parents, Children, and the Search for Identity has enjoyed fame and prizes around the globe. Its translated Mandarin version published in Taiwan also won the influential 2015 China Times Annual Book Award. He was invited to speak on TedTalk for three times, respectively on themes of depression, identity, love and same-sex marriage. Wired magazine listed his TedTalk as one of the ten must-watch speeches.
In 2001, Andrew met and fell in love with John Habich, who was 11 years elder than him. They held a civil partnership ceremony in Althorp, England in 2007. Two years later, they had a civil marriage again in Connecticut, one of the few states in the United States that recognized same-sex marriage at that time. In 2015, the United States Supreme Court ruled that state-level bans on same-sex marriage are unconstitutional. Same-sex marriage became officially legal in the United States.
Knowing each other for 16 years, they have come to celebrate the 10th year of marriage this year. Do the prince and the prince live happily ever after? John grew up in a working class family in Wisconsin. He worked as an editor for a scientific newspaper in Minneapolis after graduating from university. Not long after he met Andrew, John moved in with Andrew in New York. When they first started living together, it was a time of turbulence and conflicts. They would argue over matters as tiny as furniture arrangement, or as huge as sperm donation to having children. They had to seek help from couples counselling and sort things out little by little, and finally came to a balance to better getting along with each other. John shared with us the trick of getting along with your partner in marriage
