Dr. Albert Tu, Investigator at the CHEO Research Institute and neurosurgeon at CHEO, wondered if there was a more efficient, yet just as effective and accurate way to get an MRI of a child’s spine, without having to take as many images. With a regular MRI protocol, a child needs to be sedated for longer periods of time in order to stay still.

👉 Key Findings:

The average combined scan time of the limited MRI protocol, which takes fewer images, was 15 minutes compared to 35 minutes for the regular MRI protocol, which takes many more images. The limited protocol saved a total of 20 minutes required in the MRI for scanning.

The average percent agreement between the limited protocol and the regular protocol was 95% or more in the detection of most clinical conditions!

⭐ Using fewer, but specific images, of a child’s spine allows for a consistent and accurate diagnosis of common clinical conditions. This saves time and resources for the hospital, while also reducing stress for kids getting an MRI and their families.
