Our Visual Media Director, Wes Hawkins, knew all about the YZ250, and it sounded perfect. He snagged a 2004 Yamaha YZ250 for a modest $600. Wes’s main goal with the bike was to build it into an off-road racer, updating it with everything available and making it comparable with the current generation of 2-strokes. More definitively, Wes planned on taking the YZ project to a handful of hare scrambles and WORCS races—essentially wanting to transform the widely available and very affordable YZ250 into a YZ250X clone. He also wanted the bike flexible enough to handle single-track, endurocross, and the occasional trip to the MX track. Luckily, the YZ250 is one of a few bikes that can cover all those bases.
