To use the Eraser Tool in Adobe Illustrator, first locate it either on the left hand toolbar, or use the shortcut Shift + E. The Eraser Tool works exactly like the Eraser Tool in Adobe Photoshop if you're familiar with that, except, instead of deleting pixels from a layer, this time you delete part of a shape and create extra anchors and paths to create new outlines.
