Chilke waali mung dal dahin ke saath

Lockdown brings out difficult childhood memories. When my family went through a financial downfall; this was our daily staple food - Chilke waali mung daal with little homemade beaten curd (dahin) as couldn’t afford to buy tomatoes for this mung ki chilke wali dal. Along with bhakhri / paratha and rice is what we survived most days on. And with just 1-2 tsp oil for the entire family; this has remained in our weekly menu even today.

Ingredients:
1 cup soaked mung daal chilke waali
2 tsp oil
1 tsp Jeera (Cumin seeds)
2 finely chopped garlic (optional)
1 small onion chopped (optional)
2 finely chopped green chillies
1/2 tsp Hing (Asafoetida)
1 tbs Dhaniya powder (Coriander powder)
1/2 tsp Haldi (Turmeric powder)
Kadi patta (optional)
Coriander leaves
1/4th cup curd beaten
Water

Method:
1 cup Soaked mung daal chilke waali for 2 hour
Add 1 cup water
Place it in the pressure cooker for 4 whistles even though it was soaked for 2 hours
Daal is ready to be cooked further
Heat up a deep pan
Add 2 tsp oil
Add 1 tsp Jeera (Cumin Seeds)
Add 2 finely chopped garlic (garlic and onions are optional)
Add 1/2 tsp Hing (Asafoetida)
Add 2 chopped green chillies and 1 small chopped onion
Add some salt per taste
We will not be adding any tomatoes as later on we will be adding curd that will bring sourness
Add 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder (haldi)
Add 1 tbs Dhaniya powder (Coriander powder) - it gives a great aroma
Feel free to add kadi patta if you have at home, but it’s optional
Add 1/2 cup of water so that masalas don’t get burnt
now add the pressure cooked daal
Mix well
Add some water if too thick
Now cover the lead till you get one boil on medium flame
Now take it off the flame; now add 1/4th cup beaten curd  and mix well
Add some dhaniya on top; so Chilkawali mung daal with dahin is ready
