Cycling manufacturers all use varying last sizes(the device used to determine shoe sizes and volume) and because of that there is not a hard fast rule that determines your shoe size. Much like running shoes, you can wear up to a full size different shoe from one brand to the next. What we want to do is help you to understand your feet more clearly so that you can find the proper size shoe for yourself to help you reduce hot spots, numbness and ultimately have a shoe that you barely notice you are wearing! When measuring a shoe there are many dimensional variables that can be taken into consideration. These include, but are not limited to: Foot length, foot width, arch height, instep height and foot shape. For today we are going to discuss foot length and width. For a large percentage of cyclists, these two measurements will provide everything that you need to find a shoe that is comfortable for you. Once you have traced your foot and taken the measurements you will add 5mm to both of your foot length measurements. If you are purchasing an off the shelf brand of shoe and not doing a fully custom shoe, you will find your shoes based on your largest foot. Here is a general outline of shoe sizing, that will help you find a starting point if you are going into a local bike shop. If you are shopping online we strongly suggest you take these measurements and compare them to your cycling shoe manufacturer's website recommendations. Doing this will help to ensure that the data you are comparing is with the manufacturer's recommendations. For rider's with wider feet we suggest you look at brands such as Bont, Lake Cycling. Shimano. Riders who have very wide feet, bunions or other eccentricities, it may be necessary to look into a fully custom cycling shoe made by a manufacturer like Rocket 7. These shoes can be significantly more expensive than a stock shoe but they can be made specific to your individual needs and when riding you will feel the difference!
