Spina Bifida is a condition that develops during the first weeks of pregnancy when the bones around the spinal cord don't join together properly. Each case is unique and the size and location of the opening can affect how much the condition affects lower body function. The condition can also affect brain development.

This animation explains treatment options for a type of Spina Bifida known as Myelomeningocele, or MMC.

GLOSSARY

Spina Bifida: A birth condition that occurs when the backbone does not join together properly during the first trimester. It can cause problems with nerve and motor function in the lower body.

Myelomeningocele: A form of spina bifida where the opening in the spine allows the nerves and spinal cord to form a sac.

Spinal Cord: a long, thin bundle of nerves which is contained in the spine and makes up a key part of the central nervous system

Amniotic Fluid: the liquid surrounding a baby during pregnancy

Meninges: A type of membrane that surrounds and protects the central nervous system which includes the spinal cord, brain and cerebrospinal fluid

Cerebrospinal fluid: A clear fluid found in the brain and spinal cord. It helps to cushion the brain and control blood flow.

Hydrocephalus: A condition when a baby is born with excess fluid on the brain

Arnold Chiari II: A condition where the lower part of the brain presses into the skull

Ventriculomegaly: A condition where the ventricles of the brain are enlarged. The ventricles are responsible for producing cerebrospinal fluid.

Ultrasound: Ultrasound is a safe and widely used method which is used to monitor the baby’s progress during pregnancy. Most mothers have an ultrasound at several points throughout their pregnancy. The method uses soundwaves which reflect against the body to create a picture of the internal organs. A sonographer will usually perform this kind of scan.

Prenatal surgery: Surgery which takes place before the baby is born

Postnatal surgery: Surgery which takes after the baby is born

Fetoscope: A type of surgical device which is used to see inside the body and deliver treatment for fetal procedures.
