Bianca Lepe first took an interest in science because it seemed to be as magical as the spells and potions in the Harry Potter books she read. And once she realized that pursuing science potentially could help her change the world and benefit humanity, she was hooked.

By high school, it was clear that Lepe would go to college—and would be the first in her family to do so. But figuring out how to pay for a college education was another matter. Her father took a second job to save money, and Lepe planned to work when she got to school to ease the burden on her family. Then came the news from Caltech: Not only was Lepe accepted, but she also received a full scholarship. “I did scream . . . a lot.”

With that hurdle cleared came another: self-doubt. After a particularly difficult physics class during her freshman year, “I started to question whether or not science was the right path for me,” Lepe remembers. But thanks to the mentoring of a teaching assistant in that class—Steven Frautschi, who happens to be a preeminent theoretical physicist—she persevered.

From that point on, Lepe thrived at Caltech. She conducted research in the lab of a Nobel laureate; helped reinvigorate the Caltech Latino Association of Students in Engineering and Sciences; chaired the undergraduate student advisory board for Caltech’s Title IX efforts; and served on the committee that awards Caltech’s highest teaching honor, the Richard P. Feynman Prize. She also received a Marshall Scholarship to attend graduate school in the United Kingdom, where she plans to study synthetic biology and science communication.

See Lepe as she tells her story, along with her mentor and her mother, in the video above.
