If you kill him without attacking Maiden Astraea, she will suicide when you speak to her. You can see how I fight him in the narrow choke point. It makes it difficult for him to swing the Bramd. Usually it does a ton of damage if it connects, but I suppose the narrowness of the ledge made it lack full power when it hit me.
