Henri Rousseau was a French painter of the 19th century.

He only began painting at the age of 40. In the post-impressionist era, he developed his own style, which was influenced by naive art and exotic subjects.

Rousseau was born in Laval, France, in 1844. He was also married twice.  He had nine children with his first wife Clémence Boitard. Of these, only daughter Julia survived. His wife supported him financially and encouraged him to continue painting, although his career as a customs officer was not very successful. He died in Paris in 1910 from blood poisoning, possibly caused by an insect bite.

His paintings often depict exotic and imaginative scenes, such as jungle landscapes, animal worlds and exotic dances.

He mainly painted landscapes, portraits and still lifes. Many of his paintings contained exotic elements that he drew from his imagination or from magazines and books.

Rousseau’s painting style was unmistakable and unique. His paintings are characterized by their two-dimensional representation and the bright colors he applied in large areas. His art is often described as naïve or primitive, as he did not use traditional art techniques due to his lack of training as an artist and thus often went against the conventions of painting of his time.

One of his most famous works is "The Dream", which is considered a masterpiece of modern art.

The painting "Myself: Portrait – Landscape", also shows an interesting portrait landscape and the painting "The Sleeping Gypsy" is known for its bright colors and unusual perspective.

It is estimated that he produced between three hundred and four hundred paintings and drawings. His style of painting later influenced the Surrealists and Fauvists. Unfortunately, however, many of his works were destroyed or lost in later years.
