We use the words Bible and Scripture interchangeably to describe the Word of God. The origin of each word helps us to understand what this book actually is.

What does "Bible" mean?

Bible comes from the Greek and Latin words for "books." The Bible isn't just one book, it is a collection of many books. Depending on the version of the Bible, there are 73 books in the Catholic Bible (46 Old Testament, 27 New Testament) or 66 books in most Protestant Bibles (39 Old Testament, 27 New Testament) with some inclusion of the seven deuterocanonical books from the Old Testament.

What does "Scripture" mean?

The word Scripture comes from the Latin word meaning "writings." It has come to mean almost exclusively the sacred text of the Bible. Scripture is the written Word of God.

Scripture or Scriptures (plural)? Scripture without the "s" refers to the sacred Word of God as a whole. Sometimes Scripture is pluralized as Scriptures to refer to the books of the Bible.
