The next and perhaps most anticipated category for you degens out there is ‘Memecoin of the Year’. Following the success of Dogecoin, the dogefather of crypto, many more memecoins appeared in the hope of capitalising on the hype.
Memecoins give us the opportunity to celebrate the power of community, subcultures and even the chance to dream big. As we explore these nominees, let us acknowledge their significant influence in capturing the zeitgeist of the digital era.
Our first nominee is the meme maestro, Pepe – an anthropomorphic frog that took the meme world by storm. Pepe’s own website describes it as the ‘Most memeable memecoin in existence’
Which quite frankly tells you everything you need to know. After its launch in April last year it brought to life a new era of meme coins. The Pepe team claims ‘the dogs have had their day, it’s time for pepe to take rein’...and pepe did rein, hitting a $1 billion dollar market cap in a month before crashing back down to $400 million where it has remained relatively steady ever since.
Our next nominee is ‘Milady’, it blends the world of disruptive finance, art and internet culture.
Milady is a memecoin that banked on the success of Milady Maker, a collection of 10,000 NFTs which, as described on their website, are ‘in a neochibi aesthetic inspired by street style tribes’.
Milady received a classic Elon-Musk-inspired pump after he posted one of their NFTs on Twitter, which saw both Milady Memecoin and the floor price of its NFT collection soar.
Up next is a memecoin that is quite literally called ‘Memecoin’
Launched by Ray Chan, CEO of meme page 9gag, this meta cryptocurrency is the embodiment of what it means to be a memecoin. It’s a nod to the self-referential and infinite loop of humor inherent in internet memes, encapsulating the concept of memes replicating and evolving endlessly within the digital space. Or maybe it’s just a memecoin and I’m looking for meaning where there is none! Either way, like Sauron, they claim this is the ‘One meme to rule them all’
Our 4th nominee is ‘Bonk’ coin.Initially launched as a free airdrop to the Solana community on Christmas day in 2022 before gaining massive popularity and cult status over the past 12 months. Since then it has bonked a myriad of memecoins out of the way, gained over 450,000 holders, over 100 integrations into the Web3 world, compatibility with 9 different chains and has gained almost 4,000% since its launch. Their mission? To be the number 1 community coin in Web3, and they could be on the right path to do that.
Finally we have ‘Ordi’. After the Ordinals Protocol created BRC-20 – an experimental standard for fungible tokens on the Bitcoin blockchain – Bitcoin got its first very own memecoin.
Ordi, cleverly named to capitalise on the BRC-20 trend saw its price surge, with many mistaking it for the native Ordinals token. It established itself quickly as a mainstream memecoin and is a clear indication of crypto investors ability to buy into future potential.
