The successful outcome of any shoulder surgery is as much dependent on the surgical skills and technique as it is on the rehabilitation protocol. Each individual has his or her own timeframe of progression and treatment response and deserves a made-fit rehabilitation in which healing time lines and specific goals are included. The postoperative rehabilitation begins with close communication between the surgeon, his medical staff and the physical therapy team to discuss the patient's medical history, review surgical findings and procedures, and establish the rehabilitation guidelines. This communication continues throughout the recovery process and is an essential component in ensuring a successful outcome.
Not only the communication within the medical staff is important, but also, obviously, the communication between the medical team and the patient and the patient's compliance to treatment. In order to accomplish this, patient education is mandatory.
