1. Pension. Military pension is a monetary award, which is given to the individuals or their families in
recognition of the services in the Armed Forces. While the man is in service, he gets pay and allowances, on
his retirement or disablement, he earns service or disability pension and on demise, family pension is granted
to his family for their maintenance. Types of pension are as under:-
(a) Service Pension. Service pension is admissible to JCOs and OR on completion of
minimum 15 years qualifying service. With effect from 01 Jan 2016, Service Pension is granted
on discharge @ 50% of reckonable emoluments last drawn. Reckonable emoluments for
pension includes Basic Pay + Military Service Pay (MSP) + Class Pay + ‘X’ Group Pay (if any).
Formula Service Pension = BP+MSP+ Class Pay + ‘X’ Group Pay (If any) + Dearness Relief

(b) Disability Pension. Disability pension is admissible to the JCOs and OR on meeting following
conditions:-
(i) Indl discharged from service in LMC and disability classified as attributable to or aggravated
by Military Service.
(ii) The percentage of disability should be more than 20% and above.
(iii) Individual discharged under normal circumstances can also claim disability pension
within 07 years of discharge from service if it can be proved that the disability from which
they are suffering was contracted during the service.
(iv) Disability pension is granted @30% of reckonable emoluments last drawn for 100%
disability and it shall be reduced proportionately for less disability.
(c) Invalid Pension. Invalid pension is admissible to JCOs and OR on meeting following conditions:-
(i) Invalided out from service due to disability classified as Neither attributable to Nor aggravated
by Military Service. The minimum period of qualifying service required for invalid pension is 10
years.
(ii) Armed Forces personnel with less than 10 years of qualifying service in cases where
personnel are invalided out of service on account of any bodily or Mental infirmity which
is Neither Attributable to Nor Aggravated by Military Service and which permanently
incapacitates them from military service as well as civil re-employment, may be granted invalid
pension (Admissible to personnel invalided out on or after 04 Jan 2019).
(d) War Injury Pension. War Injury Pension is applicable to Battle Casualty (Non-Fatal)
@ 50% of reckonable emoluments last drawn as Service Element plus 100% of last
drawn emoluments for 100% disablement (Invalided out before completion of terms of
engagement) and 60% of last drawn emoluments for 100% disablement (Discharged
on completion of terms of engagement). It shall be reduced proportionately for less disability.
Personnel who have taken lump-sum compensation are not entitled for War Injury Element at the
time of retirement.
(e) Family Pension. Family Pension was introduced with effect from 01 Jan 1964 vide Army
Instructions 2/S/64. The benefits were extended to the families of Armed Forces personnel who
retired / died before 31 Dec 1963 by the Government of India, Min of Defence on 08 Aug 1985. The
precedence for award of family pension is spouse, children, mother, father, unmarried brother and
unmarried sister provided they meet laid down conditions. Types of family pension are as under :-
