5 Things You Won’t Learn in Truck Driving School.When you graduated from truck driving school, after 3 - 4 weeks of training, did you feel you were ready for the open road?
Did you feel fully qualified to be cut loose on your own behind the wheel of a big rig pulling 80000 lbs down the highway at 60 mph?
I’m betting the majority of you will say NO, I did NOT feel ready.
Today, I’ll tell you 5 things you will NOT learn at truck driving school.

1. Driving a Truck can be Dangerous Business.
CDL school will not fully inform you just how dangerous the job is you are being trained for.
2. How to Handle Your Equipment.
You learn how to shift and steer and drive that truck, but the schools often fail to train drivers how to handle their equipment and perform some pretty basic tasks.
- Scale a truck
- Slide the 5th Wheel
- Slide the axles on a trailer
- Shift a standard transmission (only automatic)

3.Load Securement.
As important as load securement is, truck driver training often skims over or completely skips teaching proper load securement.
4. You Won’t Learn That You Aren’t Ready For the Road.
You won’t learn at trucking school that you truly aren’t ready to be on your own on the open road
or find yourself in a situation when you just don’t know what the hell to do!
This is one of the biggest complaints we hear about truck schools.
5. You Won’t Learn to Advocate For Yourself as a Professional Driver.
Trucking schools don’t bother to teach you to stand up for yourself and protect your CDL as the professional driver you are.
When a new driver is parked due to bad weather conditions but dispatch saws you gotta roll. Do schools teach their students to do the right thing and hang tight until the driver feels safe to go? Not usually.
So here’s the deal.
Truck Driving School gets you a CDL. Period.
They teach enough to pass the test and give you a CDL.
The training schools DO NOT MAKE A TRUCK DRIVER OUT OF YOU (which they SHOULD).
That will come from real life experience, when you have your CDL and are on the road.
But MAN, what a hell of a way to learn…. when you’re on the road on your own!
But that’s our training system.
That’s how it’s done in North America.
My advice to you to learn what they DON”T teach you is this.
