Since the model's introduction on the market in 1999, the X5 has enjoyed great success. Soon, it was the hottest topic at every automotive gathering since everyone was asking why BMW started to make SUVs.
The 2024 BMW X5 is available in both xLine and popular M Sport trims, as well as the same basic powertrain offers, although both the powertrains themselves and the naming strategy is slightly different. The X5 continues its battle with the giants in this competitive segment, including the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, the Audi Q7, (which you also might want to consider), the recently updated Jaguar F-Pace, the Genesis GV80, the Lexus RX, the Volvo XC90, which we have reviewed, and the Range Rover Sport.
The 2024 X5's powertrains get some pretty major updates. The range starts with the sDrive40i and the xDrive40i. This is the only way that you can have the X5 with RWD. The 40i twins use a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged six-cylinder, which gets a power boost compared to the pre-LCI model. Horsepower goes up to 375 hp, and torque goes up to 398 lb-ft, both significant increases over the prior 40i-badged X5 models.
Next up from that is the renamed xDrive50e, dropping the xDrive45e that the X5 with a plug used up until now. This model uses the same twin-turbo I6 as the 40i but also gets an electric motor and a larger 25.7 kWh battery pack. The total system output is 483 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque.
In other words, the plug-in hybrid X5 has 10 more hp than a base M3. This also gives it a pretty sprightly 0-60 time of 4.6 seconds. BMW touts an electric-only range of around 40 miles, which is okay but not the best in class.
For the 2024 X5 is the renamed M60i xDrive. This X5 uses a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, which has also found its way into countless other BMW models, and even the new Range Rover. Power output stays at 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, allowing a 0-60 time in the low four-second range. Impressive stuff. Every X5 bar, the sDrive40i has standard AWD, and the power goes to the wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The xDrive50e model comes standard with a 25.7-kWh battery pack that BMW says is good for up to 40 miles of electric-only driving. The new 2024 X5 can use the battery to travel around 84 mph without tapping the gasoline engine. The battery pack of the X5 can be charged at home on 110-volt or 220-volt outlets or even at public charging stations.
BMW chose to keep things simple for the exterior updates, and at first glance, the 2024 models may carry over their styling from the outgoing model. Look closer, though, and you'll see some of the minor changes that BMW has made. The lower front bumper benefits from new air intakes that appear more rectangular.
The trademark twin-kidney grilles are mostly unchanged, but the X5 joins the X6 in offering buyers the option of an illuminated grille. This optional piece of equipment has been spreading to other members of the BMW family in recent years, and their debut on the X5 is the latest example of this in action.
The headlights are sleeker than before and adopt a slimmer design versus the 2023 model's chunkier units. Additionally, the rear gets updated LED taillights with a new "X" motif and a redesigned rear bumper.
The high-rider drove like a car, provided an MPV-like interior space, and was luxurious in many ways. But fast forward to 2023, the car was already at its fourth generation's facelift, and the sales were still consistent. Yet, the automaker considered that it was time for a change.
At the front, the headlights got slimmer, and the v-shaped turn signals/daytime running lights pointed outwards replaced the former hexagonal-shaped ones featured in the 2020 model year. In addition, the front bumper was changed and sported a lower U-shaped grille flanked by slim and tall vertical air inlets that channeled the air to the sides of the vehicle. At the back, the automaker installed new taillights.
The X6 also gets the M Sport Package standard (it's still an option on the X5), including darkened trim accents and a unique design on the front bumper and trapezoidal tailpipe trim design.
An optional M Sport Professional Package is available for M Sport-equipped X5 and X6 models. The package adds a matte-black grille surround for the twin-kidney grilles, black chrome exhaust tailpipe trim and shadowline accents for the lights. It also adds M Sport brakes and an M Sport exhaust system; the latter item is standard on M60i models but unavailable on the X5 xDrive50e.
