You’ve probably heard that old saying about your body being a “temple”, and it is. I want to be clear about that. Your body is an astonishing wonderland capable of amazing things. But it’s also filled to the brim with repulsive, disgusting, just… gross stuff. I hope you’re not eating right now.

Eyelash mites. Hey, how often do you blink? Just think about this when you blink during this video. The older you are, the more likely that your lustrous lashes are home to Demodex mites. They live off the skin cells and oil on your hair follicles – and it’s a good thing the mites are usually harmless. These little jerks are estimated to have colonized more than 80% of eyelashes in people over the age of 60.

Mucus. Boogers. Snot. Phlegm. Whatever you want to call it, there’s a reason it exists: mucus. It’s the stringy, sticky fluid that coats the inside of your nose, mouth, sinuses, throat, lungs and GI tract. Every day your body makes between 1 to 2 liters of this goo. Your nose whips up some up every 20 minutes. Don’t get me wrong – mucus is important. It protects you from bacteria, debris and so on. But still. You’re a bag of slowly leaking snot.

Bacteria. We all sort of know this one, right? Our bodies are full of bacteria… but how full, you might ask? It turns out the healthy human body is actually less human than you might think. Your body hosts about 100 trillion bacteria, and that’s not even counting the viruses and other microbes. If you put all the microbial cells in your body together they’d outnumber the human cells by a factor of ten. All but 1% of these bacteria are either neutral or pretty cool. But still. We’re each a walking bacteria metropolis.

Gas. You knew this one was coming: gas. The average human being farts anywhere between 14 to 23 times a day. I did a video on this for BrainStuff, and it still grosses me out. The type of foods you consume can affect the type and volume of the gas your produce – high-fiber and sugary foods, like beans. The gas in your farts is usually carbon dioxide, nitrogen, hydrogen, and sometimes methane or sulfur. 23 times a day. Statistically, someone farted while watching this video.

Poop. And while we’re on the subject, we can’t forget poop. I’m going to try to be an adult about this. But we, as a species, are literally full of shit. Our small intestines are tubes about 20 feet (6 meters) in length and 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter. The large intestine is about 5 feet (1.5 meters) long and 3 inches (7.6cm) in diameter. That’s about the length of a garden hose, inside you, filled with poop. Your excrement is made of undigested food, mucus, bacteria, and dead cells. The combination of all this stuff makes your poop brown. Most of it is water. And it’s just… just gross.
