Sand and quarry transporters in Machakos have sued the county government demanding that the county scraps the new tax rates under the county Finance Act of 2018.
Through their lawyer, the traders say the county's move to hike levies on sand trucks was not consultative, and they want the court to compel the county to stick to the old rates. They argue the cess increases from 35,000 shillings to 70,000 shillings for the large trucks and from 21,000 to 35,000 shillings for smaller trucks is unrealistic as it will push up the cost of construction. The petition was brought before Justice George Odunga, who has set the hearing date at the 2nd of July.
